Continental GP 4000S review by P2

MMCC/4000s_SL02.jpg

For reference, I have been using Michelin ProRace 2 tires for the last 4-5 sets of tires.  I figured its time to try something new.  So this review will compare the new Continental 4000s to the PR2.

Well, after 24 miles via my San Dieguito loop, I can honestly say that there is NO performance gain or loss that I can tell over the Michelin PR2!  I would bet if you gave me 5 different sets of same level tires that I would be hard pressed to tell any performance difference.

As for subjective differences:  I did try to take turns a bit more aggressively and each time w/o incident.  But I'm sure I could have done the same with the PR2.  The only characteristic that I thought I could tell (that was somewhat better) is the overall ride smoothness of the 4000s.  I'm not sure if this is due to the tires being new or just a 'better' compound.  Keep in mind that I have about 1,200 miles on my current set of PR2 (not worn, will be keeping them as spares).  I wouldn't say they roll any faster or slower, but they feel alot smoother.  I have them pumped at 120psi which is 4psi higher than the max for the PR2.  Yet, despite the higher PSI, the ride was smoother.  Climbing both on/off saddle felt smoother as well as the 4000s seems to absorb road imperfections a bit better.

Summary:  Are they $7 better each over the PR2?  If you are hoping for a performance gain, I would say save your $14.  If you want a smoother rolling tire that arguably looks alot cooler than the PR2, then order now!!  The price differential will be a moot point once the PR2 supplies run out.  The new PR3 cost more or equal depending on exchange rate to the 4000s.  Since the PR3 still is 2 color (Michelin insists on NOT making an all black tire so that they can highlight where the different compounds are on their tires...go figure!), it may come down to aesthetics.

I personally like the all black (almost gloss like) look w/ silver labels of the 4000s.  Also note that the 4000s are directional tires...so they can only be installed in one direction.  Of course I find that out AFTER I installed the first one...beware of my mistake!  So anyways, unless the new PR3 have some kind of performance advantage, stock up on PR2 for now.  If nothing else, the 4000s looks great...image is everything in cycling right?
