Thank you for supporting the Gawad Kalinga ONE celebration!
As avid cyclists we hope you find this cycling event very enjoyable and memorable, and that you take away a sense of pride
in helping to further the GK cause by simply riding your bike!
Purpose:
The purpose of the Sikad ride is to raise community awareness in an effort to promote
the Gawad Kalinga organization. Although a registration fee is not required, we encourage you to make a donation to the organization. This ride
is intended express our solidarity in this cause.
The Course (Directions & Route Map):
The Sikad course is a flat, approximately 39-mile
out-and-back route passing through four cities around beautiful San Diego Bay (see route map below). Beginning in Kimball
Park in National City, the ride heads south towards Chula Vista, west through Imperial Beach and north along the Silver Strand
State Beach to our turn-around location and SAG stop in Glorietta Park in the City of Coronado. Most of the course is
along designated bike paths. However, there are city streets in Imperial Beach that we will be navigating which have
high traffic volumes, so please exercise extreme caution and always obey all traffic laws!
How the ride will be conducted:
All riders will be directed to the starting location after
checking in at the registration booth. The ride will leave promptly at 8:00 AM and will be led by Red Sioson of Lucky
Chan, Sammy Eusantos of MMCC, and leaders of other participating clubs towards the bike path. We will roll out as a
group at 8:00 AM sharp. The ride will be led by toward the bike path, where we will continue to ride as a group.
THIS IS NOT A RACE!!! Staying together will help us establish a larger presence along the route. However, we realize
that traffic conditions may split the group along the way. At the SAG stop all riders will re-group for the ride back
to the finish. Our goal in the end is to return to Kimball Park as “ONE” group. Therefore, we will
again re-group at a location TBD before we parade into the park.
Parking:
Parking in the area is quite limited. Therefore, we encourage carpooling.
We cannot be responsible for damage or theft to your vehicle, so please use caution and common sense when parking your vehicle,
and please make sure you park legally. The National City Police Department is located at the west edge of Kimball Park.
SAG Stop:
The SAG station will be located at Glorietta Bay
Park (http://www.beachcalifornia.com/ glorietta-bay-park.html), which is the turn-around point as indicated in
the map and route directions. The SAG station will be clearly marked with the orange MMCC banner. This is our
re-group location from which we will again depart as a group. Refreshments will be provided and a first-aid kit will
be available for your use at the SAG station. There is also a restroom at this location. Mechanical assistance
may be available through fellow riders, but will not be provided at the SAG or along the route. Therefore, please make
sure your bike is in good operating condition prior to the ride. Please use trash receptacles and be respectful of other
park facilities and park users.
Rider Safety:
Once again THIS IS NOT A RACE!!! Our purpose is to demonstrate our solidarity as a group. As normally practiced
in group rides, please alert fellow riders to road hazards, use hand signals, and call out “Stopping!” or “Car
Back!” or whatever alert the situation warrants. The bike path in some locations is narrow, and there will be
many other cyclists using the path in both directions since this is a popular route. Please obey all traffic laws and
exercise extreme caution in the high-traffic areas such as Palm Avenuein Imperial Beach. Please be sure to have in your
possession some form of identification such as a Road ID. You will be required to submit emergency contact information
prior to the ride. Again, if you require first-aid, a kit with basic supplies such as bandages will be provided at the
SAG location. Please do not attempt to use your cell phone while riding! If you need to use your phone, please
stop and move completely off of the bike path for your safety and the safety of other riders. Above all, use common
sense!
